Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp on Friday denied all the rumours about him joining the German national team but he keeps all the options open.
Klopp, 56, has confirmed that he will not leave Liverpool before his contract runs out in 2026.
“The job of national coach is and would be a great honour — there’s no question about that,” Klopp said.
"The problem that stands in the way of the whole thing is my loyalty. I can’t just leave Liverpool now and say I’ll take over Germany for a short time. That doesn’t work and the request isn’t even there.
"If I’m supposed to do that [manage Germany] at some point, then I have to be available and I’m not currently. I have a responsibility towards the club.
"Basically, it’s an interesting job. But I don’t know yet whether I’ll do something completely different after I leave Liverpool. I want to keep my options open."
Germany’s current manager Hansi Flick is under some serious scrutiny after an unsatisfactory start to his managerial career with the national team. Out of the last 16 games, he only managed to win four.
With Germany set to host Euro 2024, and considering their terrible performance in a major tournament since Euro 2016 — where they reached semi-finals — the team’s management want the 56-year-old to take the job so they don’t have to go through another embarrassing tournament.
Klopp joined Liverpool as a head coach in October 2015 on a three-year deal where he guided the Reds to their first-ever European final, which they lost to Sevilla, since 2007.
But after an impressive job done by the German and his staff in his debut season, they were immediately awarded a six-year contract extension which would keep them at the club since 2022. He then went on to sign another contract extension in April 2022 till 2026.
Klopp’s time at Liverpool has been a success. He helped the Reds win their first-ever Premier League after almost 30 years, beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the process.
He also won the UEFA Champions League (UCL) in 2019 after beating Tottenham Hotspurs 2-0 in the final for the first time since 2005.
